BOOK TRAILER
“This book is, first and foremost, a book that makes you feel good. Whitney obviously is an aficionado of baseball and describes the action well. He maintains the heroics within reasonable limits and the statistics accurate. The book moves very well and primarily is one that will appeal to lovers of the game. However, even though non baseball lovers may find themselves skimming some of the more specific game descriptions, a glossary of baseball terms is included, and they may still find it an enjoyable read because, in spite of all the doom and gloom in today’s world, it is a story that provides one with a feeling that nice things really could happen.”
— John M. Manhold, Fascinating Authors
"The plot is deceptively simple, and the characters are few and well defined. This is a feel good book. If you are looking for a few hours of escapism, Pinch Hitter will hit the spot. There are no evil villains to vanquish, and no world that needs saving, just a great uplifting story. I really like Dean Whitney’s story telling approach, he has taken a subject that obviously he knows a great deal about and managed to make it appeal to non baseball fans. He takes the time to explain the terminology and strategy of the game making this a story accessible to any reader."
—Simon Barrett, Blogger's News Network
"Pinch Hitter is a moving story and I could see that Whitney spent a lot of time around a major league baseball team. The clubhouse and front office scenes are more detailed than I would expect to find from an author with no personal day-to-day connection to major league baseball, and Whitney also shows a strong knowledge of the situational game, where managers have to strategize against each other, using mind and matter to win. Reading Pinch Hitter, I was reminded of Rudy, the Notre Dame football movie, where a 26 year old college senior has overcome dyslexia to earn a degree and have a chance to play for a national championship team."
— Stuart Nachbar, BestBookTour.com
"Dean Whitney's passion and love for the game of baseball is beyond apparent through his words in Pinch Hitter. A truly great tale of what makes baseball so special, Pinch Hitter reminds us all why we watch."
— Darren Smith, XX Sports Radio Personality and co-host of “Too Much Show” and “Padres BP”
SYNOPSIS
Pinch Hitter is the poignant story about a middle-aged electronics salesman who fulfills a childhood dream of playing big league baseball for his hometown team.
A superior high school athlete, David Robbins fantasized about becoming a big league ballplayer until his older brother—a teammate and highly-scouted senior pitcher—was seriously injured during a team practice. Devastated by his brother’s career-ending accident, David quits the team and vows never again to play organized baseball. He remains a student of the game, however, and over the next twenty-nine years logs countless hours honing his hitting skills in local batting cages.
And then one day, out of the blue, he’s asked by a friend to play in an amateur league game for a team that will be forced to forfeit if he declines. Although deeply conflicted by his dilemma, he ultimately decides to end his self-imposed abstention from baseball and agrees to play. Going 4-for-4 with a home run in that game, David’s superlative hitting instincts catch the eye of Lester Pittman, the manager of the San Diego Armadas—a major league club besieged by injuries and in dire need of offensive help while in the heat of a divisional race. Impressed with David’s abilities and knowledge of baseball, the manager invites him to a team workout. The ensuing events astound the San Diego fans and the entire baseball community.
While capturing the hearts of the fans and learning to cope with an overzealous media, David soon discovers the cost of celebrity and is forced to reveal a family secret. Through it all, he learns that sometimes even crazy dreams come true.
